WALK ON WEDNESDAY

A huge thank you to all parents, children and staff who doned their high-vis jackets and took part in our first 'WoW' day for this year on Wednesday September 29th. A large crowd (including some pets!) walked from Our Lady Queen of Peace church to the school. The Green Schools Committee would like to thank an Garda Síochana for being present on the day. FOURTH GREEN FLAG

Congratulations to the staff and children for their hard work and dedication in securing our fourth Green Flag (Transport).Ms. Lantry (Green Schools Coordinator),two members of the Green Schools Committee and Mr. Flahive attended the Green Flag Awards Ceremony in the Radisson Blu Hotel, Athlone ,on May 26th. We hope to celebrate the unfurling of our Transport Flag in September. Details will follow in early September.

ACTION DAY

As part of acquiring our flag for Transport, we held an ‘Action Day’ based on the travel theme on Friday, June 5th.

 

To begin the day, a large crowd (wearing their high vis jackets!) turned up at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church and walked to the school. I would like to sincerely thank all parents, children and staff for making the effort to partake in the walk. It was wonderful to see so many people walking to school on the day.

After this, each class took part in a Climate Change workshop held by Mr. Ray Foley of An Taisce in the GP room, which was adorned with projects from each class about transport. Each class was given a souvenir and there were even spot prizes! We would like to thank Mr. Foley for facilitating this workshop.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

CycleSafe Training:

CycleSafe training continues each Thursday until May 7th for 6th Class pupils. 5th Class pupils will begin the training on Thursday May 14th. Children will be given a letter and permission slip to be signed and returned before the programme commences. The programme will equip the children with the necessary skills to safely ride their bicycles on the road. Bicycles and all safety gear will be provided but children may bring their own bicycles if they wish.The Greens Schools Committee would like to thank Westmeath Sport Partnership for facilitating the programme in our school.

Road Safety Authority talk

On Monday February 9th and Tuesday February 10th, Emma Clerkin from the Road Safety Authority spoke to each class in the school about road safety, in particiular how the children could keep themselves safe when travelling to and from school when walking, cycling, travelling by car and travelling on the bus. Emma spoke to the chidren about the importance of making themselves as visible as possible when walking or cycling, the importance of a wearing a helmet correctly when cycling and using seatbelts in cars and buses. All staff and students wish to thank Emma for the entertaining and very important workshop that she delivered.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Dr Bike Days:

On Monday February 16th, each class got the opportunity to take part in a workshop presented by Mr Ray Foley from An Taisce. As part of the workshop, Mr Foley discussed the different parts of a bike and identified all the tools one might use when repairing a bike. He spoke to the children about doing an 'M-check' on their bikes to check that it is ready for the road. The workshop was very informative and enjoyable.

Mr Foley returned on Wednesday February 18th and concluded the 'Dr Bike Days' by fixing bicycles belonging to the children. This included things like fixing a punctured tyre, oiling chains and adjusting saddles. The Green Schools Committee would like to thank Mr Foley for presenting this workshop and of course for fixing our bicycles!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Green Schools Update:

 

On Wednesday 10th September 2014, the pupils, staff and parents of Coosan  National School gathered to raise the school’s third Green Flag, joined by special guests Fr Declan Shannon, Gabrielle McFadden TD and Cllr. Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran. The school received their flag for their work promoting Energy Awareness.

 

Entertainment on the day was provided by the Army Band, under the batton of Company Sergeant Terry Donoxan. The band played a selection of songs including songs from ‘The Jungle Book’, ‘Toy Story’ and a very popular One Direction medley. They also took the time to show the various instruments to the children and even got some volunteers to conduct the music!

 

Afterwards school principal Mr Tom Flahive spoke about the trojan work done by pupils and staff in obtaining the flag and in particular by the Green Schools committee and sub-committees including current staff members Ms Eagney, Ms Brophy and Ms Lantry and former staff members Mrs Forde and Mrs Delaney. He thanked the school’s Parents,  Board of Management and Parent’s Association for their continued support as the school works towards obtaining its fourth Green flag for Transport with initiatives such as ‘WoW’ (Walk on Wednesdays), which will relaunch from next Wednesday (September 17th).

 

Mrs Catherine Monagan and Mr Flahive then raised the Green Flag as the band members played. Parents and guests were invited for refreshments courtesy of the Parent’s Association while the children were rewarded for all their hard work with an ice-cream treat. A wonderful and enjoyable day was had by all.
